What is Peer Instruction? (beta)
This article provides an overview of the Peer Instruction activity type, which facilitates dynamic instructor-led peer discussions in InteDashboard.
This Guide is for:
- Super Admin
- Teacher Admin (Full-Access)
- Teacher (Owner Full-Access)
We’re excited to share that a long-requested feature is finally taking shape — Peer Instruction!
This new activity type has been inspired by the many teachers who wanted a way to run a Peer Instruction workflow directly within InteDashboard. The version we’ll soon be releasing is an early prototype — not the final product — but a first look that we’ll refine together with the instructors who have been asking for it. Once it’s matured through this feedback loop, we’ll make it available to all customers.
To respect institutions that wish to maintain a strict Team-Based Learning environment, the Peer Instruction activity type will be disabled by default. Super Admins can choose to enable it in their Global Settings if they wish to experiment with it.
How it works:
- It behaves like an iRAT-only activity, but the instructor is able to control question navigation.
- Students can respond only to the question the instructor has designated.
- After responses are collected, instructors can launch Presentation Mode to facilitate peer discussion.
This first version focuses on individual response and instructor-led facilitation. We anticipate that some instructors may later want to extend this into a team-based (tRAT-style) discussion and selection phase — that’s something we’ll explore after consultations with early adopters.
Here's a preview of the Peer Instruction feature:
Peer Instruction: Quick Setup Guide
- In your chosen module, click “+ New Activity.”
- Select “Peer Instruction.”
- Name your activity and complete the setup steps as you would for other activity types.
- Publish the activity.
How to run Peer Instruction in a class setting:
- Students click to join the activity and record attendance.
- Teacher waits for all students to enter, then start the activity.
- Teacher launches presentation mode to display questions.
- Optional: Enable Anonymous Presentation Mode to hide student names. - Teacher displays the first question. Students answer individually on their devices.
- Teacher monitors answers in real time. To proceed, click “Next Question” when ready.
- Continue until all questions are complete.
Please note that this beta version only supports individual responses. Team discussion, peer exchange, and team revotes will be added in future updates.
We welcome your feedback as we continue refining this feature. Share your thoughts with us at support@intedashboard.com.
