FAQ for Independent Timers Extra Time

Introduction

What are Extra Time Accommodations?

Extra Time Accommodation are legally provided to support learners who require extra time for timed activities due to cognitive or processing challenges.

They may be permanent or situational, depending on the learner’s circumstances.

Accommodations should not reduce learning expectations by reducing the scope, complexity, or rigor of an activity or assessment.

Which activities can I set Extra Time Accommodations for?

Only activities with the following criteria can have extra time accommodations.

  • Individual activity - IRAT, Individual Application Case, Peer Evaluation
  • Has a time limit

An Accommodations section will only show on publishing if the activity

  • Has students with default accommodations

Setting Extra Time

What type of extra time accommodations can I add during the activity?

Only custom time accommodations (in hours and minutes) can be added after the activity has been published. Time accommodations in multiples of the activity duration (25%, 50%, 100%) can only be preset in Courses > Students Tab > Student Accommodations. These will be calculated when the time limit is set for an activity.

What is the format of custom extra time?

You may set Custom extra time in hours and minutes. Any duration longer than 24 hours will only be indicated in days.

What are the limits of setting extra time?

For synchronous activities,

You can keep adding extra time as needed during an activity, and after it has ended, subject to the following conditions:

  • Within open period
  • Student has not submitted

If the instructor manually ends the activity, this will override and remove all extra time settings.

For asynchronous activities,

You can keep adding extra time during the open period and after student has started the activity, subject to the following conditions:

  • Within open period
  • Student has not submitted

How do I set default extra time accommodations?

Students who require accommodations should be preset in Course level > Student Accommodations page. If you enable the ‘Apply’ setting during the publishing of an activity, you may view and apply the entire list of students with accommodations in that activity.

If you wish to select only a few students’ to be applied, you either have to edit them back in the course level student accommodations page, OR Choose to (1) NOT APPLY the accommodation settings at publishing, then (2) Add custom extra time during the activity.

Can I remove extra time accommodations?

For a synchronous activity, extra time can be removed as long as the activity has not started. For an asynchronous activity, extra time can be removed as long as the student has not started the test. This applies in cases where the student is absent.

Please note the below: All extra time set for the student will be cleared upon Remove.

If you wish to change the extra time, you will need to (1) remove and (2) add extra time again.

Changes made in the activity’s accommodation will not affect their default accommodations in Student Management.

Ensure all extra time accommodations are correct: Before starting the activity (Synchronous) Before publishing the activity (Asynchronous)

If a student is absent during the activity, will they still have extra time when I re-open the activity?

For an asynchronous activity, if a student was absent (i.e. not started), extra time will remain indicated beside their name on the Attendance Dashboard. For a synchronous activity, all extra time will be removed once an activity has closed.

Main Activity Timer

If I extend the main activity timer, will students with extra time have accommodations applied on the time extension?

Extra time accommodations will NOT apply when the Main Activity Timer is extended. Student accommodation settings (25%, 50%, 100%) are only applied once when the activity is published. The instructor has to manually add custom extra time (in hours and minutes) for individual students after the main activity timer is extended.

Example John has 50% extra time accommodation. In a 20 minute test, he has 30 minutes in total (extra 10 minutes). The teacher extends the test by another 20 minutes. Now John will have 30 + 20 minutes = 50 minutes. The teacher can then proceed to add custom time accommodations for John as long as he has not submitted and the activity is open.

If I end the main activity, will the students on extra time be kicked out?

Please be mindful that ending the activity manually will apply to all students, including those with extra time. This applies to both sync and async activities. For synchronous activities, all extra time indicators on instructor dashboard will also be cleared when the activity is closed.

Extra Time Indicators

What does the purple timer on the Attendance dashboard show?

Before the activity starts, the timer indicator beside the student’s name displays the total amount of extra time they have been given. When the activity is ongoing, it displays the running actual time the student has remaining to complete their activity (including the extra time). When the activity has ended or when the student has submitted, the indicator will no longer display.

How do I know if the student’s extra time is up?

The timer indicators beside their names on Attendance dashboard will no longer be displayed once the student has used up their extra time. For a synchronous activity, all extra time indicators will no longer be shown once the activity has ended. For an asynchronous activity, if the student did not enter the test (e.g. absent), the extra time indicator will still remain on the Attendance dashboard. The teacher can opt to add extra time to the student as long as it is within the Open Period.
