About Safe-Exam Browser

This article provides an overview of utilizing Safe Exam Browser alongside InteDashboard

About Safe Exam Browser (“SEB”)

InteDashboard does not include a built-in browser blocking feature. However, institutions have the option to utilize Safe Exam Browser alongside InteDashboard if they wish to implement browser restriction capabilities.

We have only tested Safe Exam Browser using an email and password login – we have not tested Safe Exam Browser using an LTI login. We are not sure if Safe Exam Browser will work when students access InteDashboard through an LMS LTI integration.

Safe Exam Browser is a free open-source software available here: https://safeexambrowser.org/news_en.html

  • Safe Exam Browser requires
    • Teacher download and installation: Teacher downloads and installs the teacher version of SEB on a teacher device.

configures SEB so that students can only access InteDashboard while using SEB.
    • Distribute configuration file to students: Teachers distribute the SEB configuration file to students.
    • Student download and installation: Students download and install the student version on student devices.
    • Student launches SEB: Student launches SEB using the configuration file and can begin the test.
  • A video of showing the installation, setup and testing of the Safe Exam Browser with InteDashboard using a Windows PC is available here (8:27). A video showing how to create the configuration file using a macOS device is here (3:23). As shown in the video, we were able to download, install, setup and test SEB with InteDashboard in less than 10 minutes.

Preventing non-SEB access by students (BETA testing feature)

  1. There is an optional setting in InteDashboard which requires students to access InteDashboard through SEB. This is designed to prevent non-SEB access by students.
  2. This feature is only available upon request. Please contact support@intedashboard.com if you would like this feature to be enabled for your account.

Academic Integrity Settings and Approaches

Some institutions have found the following helpful:
  1. Low stakes: Make IRATs a low stakes or very low percentage of grading to encourage academic integrity.
  2. Integrity question: Have the first question on every IRAT be about academic integrity such as:
    1. “It is an honor code violation to cheat on this IRAT. Will you cheat on this IRAT?” with a Yes or No answer or
    2. “Why is integrity important in health professions? with a choice like “Patients trust their lives to healthcare professionals every day”
  3. School devices in kiosk mode: Students take IRATs in school iPads that are setup in “kiosk mode” so that no other websites can be accessed.
  4. Optional IRAT settings:
    i. Randomize answer choices
ii. Prevent students from changing answers
iii. Require student to answer questions in sequence
A guide for setting these options is here: What are the IRAT Optional Settings?
  5. Password protected IRAT: This requires students to enter a password before starting the IRAT. A guide for this is here: How do I add access password to activities
  6. Very Short Answer question type (BETA): We have a beta version of “Very Short Answer” question type that requires students to type in free responses. This may make cheating more difficult.
